The Garner Trojans needed overtime to advance to the Day’Ron Sharpe Bracket 5th place game 72-69 over a talented Warrenton (VA) Highland Hawks team at the 2023 John Wall Holiday Invitational.
Garner fought from behind for the majority of the game but never let the hawks get a lead of more than seven. The Trojans used a 19 point fourth quarter force the game into extra time. Senior Tayshaun Whitner led Garner in scoring with 30 points and added 5 rebounds. Ghabrial Scott added another 15 points while shooting 7-7 from the floor. Cam’Ren Reyes, who missed Wednesday’s game, returned to the court to tack on 11 more for the Trojans.
Highland’s athletic forward, Nate Amet, put up a game high in points and rebounds with 32 and 10 respectively. A pair of junior guards, Shivas Taylor and Chance Perkins, added 11 points each for the Hawks.
Garner returns to Broughton High School Friday for the Day’Ron Sharpe 5th place game against the winner of Raleigh Word of God-Raleigh Enloe. The loser of Word of God-Enloe will face Highland in a consolation game on Friday at William Peace University.
