The inaugural game for the Henderson NV Coronado Cougars was a high intensity Friday night battle between them and the Garner High Trojans that finished with a 50-45 win for the former.
The teams went into half with Coronado leading by 5, and that point spread was how the game ended as well. Thanks to a powerful showing from the Trojans in the third quarter, Garner found themselves clinging to a 3 point lead going into the final frame. The Cougars, however, put together a defensive stand for the ages holding the Trojans to 8 points in the fourth quarter to come out on top.
Coronado junior Munir Greig and senior Amare Oba led their team's game with 12 and 11 points respectively, with Oba tacking on 8 rebounds.
The Trojans efforts were spearheaded by seniors Darius Whitner and Kingston Beale. Whitner had 14 points and 7 rebounds, and Beale put up 12 of his own, as well as 5 rebounds.
The Cougars will play again Monday at 5pm against the winner of Broughton-Wilson. The Trojans will play the loser of the same game Saturday afternoon at 12:30pm.
